On the third weekend in May, Franklin County and surrounding areas are treated to the Franklin County Quilt Show. The Extension Homemakers and Quilt Batts combine their efforts for this endeavor. Within the festivities there are nine categories in which exhibitors can enter their quilts. Eight of the categories have winners chosen by people’s choice. The other category is a new particular challenge each year and judged by professional judges. The challenge for 2017 was “Quilts of Valor”.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation is a national organization whose mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
This is accomplished by volunteer quilters all over the nation who piece, quilt and award quilts to veterans and service personnel locally or through the national organization.
As of May 16, 2017, 159,201 quilts have been awarded to military personnel both on active duty and veterans.
The 2017 Franklin County Quilt Show is proud to participate in this worthwhile project. The quilts you see tonight will be added to that total. Through the overwhelming success of this year’s challenge, the Quilt Show committee is making QOV a regular category each year. Written by Nancy Bodnar
